PyDev 2.5.0 released

Major things in the PyDev 2.5.0 release include:

  • Proper support for Django 1.4 (as it's layout changed, the project creation wizard wasn't working properly).
  • Better patching of Django 1.4 for the debugger and auto-reload (details at the end of the page: http://pydev.org/manual_adv_django.html). Note: there is an issue when using it on Linux, which is already fixed in the nightly build, so, if you are on Linux and want to experiment with it, please update to the current nightly build.
  • The interactive console can now be attached to the variables/expressions view (the preference at: window > preferences > PyDev > Interactive Console and check 'Connect console to Variables Debug View?' must be enabled). Also, there's drag and drop support for it now.

Aside from those, many bugs were fixed and minor improvements were done. More details can be seen at: http://pydev.org/

Congrats! I look forward to the updates. Keep up the wonderful work!

On a side question, as I've used PyDev in the past and found it a great experience. Lately I hear people rave about PyCharm. All the things they rave about, however, are in PyDev. What am I missing?

The next release will have a strong focus on bug-fixing, so, hope to be able to tackle it for the next release.

Hi Jason,

Although I may not be the best person to explain about PyCharm, I think that feature-wise it's very close to PyDev (with some ups and downs on each side).

I feel that the main difference is that some people don't get comfortable with the way Eclipse structures things (Eclipse is both the strong and weak side of PyDev), so, although I feel pretty comfortable on PyDev, it seems some people find it difficult to have it configured properly (usually something that looking at the Getting Started guide or asking in StackOverflow solves promptly).

Now, after having PyDev properly setup, I think it's mostly a matter of taste, as they're not so far feature-wise...

Also, I won't go deeper on other differences because I'm too biased to PyDev and I would **definitely** not change it for any other IDE.

In short, I think that choosing an IDE or editor is to a high degree a matter of personal taste, so, there's usually no good in discussing it too much -- better experimenting the options you think are worth your time and decide for yourself :)
